NVIDIA GeForce 310M

The Nvidia GeForce 310M or 310M G (GT218 core) is a DirectX 10.1 capable graphics card for small and light notebooks and successor of the GeForce G210M. The clock speeds are practically the same (30 MHz shader clock at 1530 MHz), making the performance almost equal to the G should be 210M. Eventually, the power consumption by the improved 40nm process, however, was reduced. The Nvidia website are 73 gigaflops of computing power (G 210M 72 gigaflops had). The graphics card is probably for the new Core i3 / i5-based notebooks are used (G210M for Core 2 Duo-based laptops).

The GT218 core is based, according to Nvidia’s high-end desktop architecture (GTX 200) and therefore has some improvements over the previous generation (G110M). Furthermore, the improved micro-architecture to extend battery life and increase performance.

The GeForce 310M supports video decoding in graphics chip (probably with PureVideo HD VP4) for less CPU load when decoding HD and Hybrid SLI (Hybrid Power and GeForceBoost) added (only in connection with a recent Nvidia chipset). The built-in video processor 4 (VP4) supports the complete decoding of H.264, VC-1, MPEG-2, and now MPEG-4 ASP (DivX or XviD). Only MPEG-1 is not supported (but the decoding complexity is minimal).

As with the old 8600 GS 16 by so-called stream processors, the graphic work (which used the pixel and vertex shaders). The advantage is that there are no idle theortisch the ALUs more. The stream processors at NVIDIA are 1-dimensional (1D) and can be a scalar per clock with a MADD (addition and multiplication) and MUL Statement (multiplication) . In addition, NVIDIA overclocked the shader ALUs is higher than the rest of the chip (1530 versus 625 MHz).

Thanks to CUDA, DirectX Compute and OpenCL support, the stream processors are used for other applications (video coding) and are in such special applications much faster than current CPUs (work by the high number of shaders in parallel). PhysX 310M is not supported by the lack of performance.

Modern DirectX 10 games on the 310M run by the small number of shaders and the 64-bit memory only minimal construction – medium details at low resolutions. Older (DirectX 9) games such as Half Life 2 or Far Cry, however, are liquid at medium to high settings playable. Some very demanding games like GTA4 or NFS Shift not even run smoothly in the lowest settings. Therefore, the GeForce 310M not recommended for serious gamers.
